Review of vitamin D and solar ultraviolet radiation-B (UVB) for reducing the risk of diseases related to viruses including certain respiratory tract diseases, autoimmune diseases, and several types of cancer. Author notes that vitamin D plays a role in reducing risk, severity, and mortality of respiratory tract infections, potentially reduces dengue fever risk, is protective against Epstein-Barr virus-associated diseases like multiple sclerosis, and reduces risk of certain cancers. The review provides evidence that vitamin D supplementation and sufficient vitamin D levels can help ameliorate diseases linked to viral infections through regulating immune responses and other mechanisms.
